Dennis Nykoliation

Dennis was raised in Fisher Branch, in Manitoba's Interlake Region, and began playing in a dance band in the surrounding area by the time he was 13 years old. He was greatly influenced by several great Canadian violinists ( fiddlers ) including Don Messer, Ward Allen, Tommy Buick, and especially Andy Dejarlis who's style Dennis greatly admires. In addition, his violin teacher, Mike Uhryniuk, was a gifted violinist who not only taught Dennis the fundamentals of playing the violin, but he taught him how to play polkas, waltzes, kolomaykas, foxtrots and all the rest of the various dances in a very unique upbeat manner.

The very first dance band that Dennis was a part of, was called " The Regent Ramblers " and was made up of some very talented local musicians. It was there that Dennis learned how to play a unique mix of music made up of Old Tyme fiddle tunes, western swing and country music, and of course Ukrainian music. Who could ever forget the two day Ukrainian wedding dances that required the band to play 60-90 minutes non-stop during the " presentation of gifts " to the bride and groom.

By the mid 1960's Dennis joined Bill Woloshyn and The Interlake Polka Kings where he was the "fiddler" in the band's first five albums and eight singles. The IPK's were one of the more popular groups in the Ukrainian music category at that time and began touring extensively throughout the prairie provinces. Dennis also served as MC at the bands concerts and radio show over CKDM in Dauphin, Manitoba.

In 1970, Dennis moved to Toronto to pursue, what turned out to be, a very successful business career. During his 40 year business career, he was a senior manager at NCR Canada and GE Canada Housewares - was President of Black & Decker Canada, President & CEO of Cambridge Towel, President & CEO of CanWel Building Materials and President of GSW Building Products where he retired in early 2007.

While he left the music scene in 1970 to pursue his business career, he actually never stopped playing and staying in touch with the violin and the type of music that he had always played. When Bill Woloshyn reunited the core of the original Interlake Polka Kings back together again in the Fall of 2002, Dennis picked up right where he left off and continued with the IPK's for 6 more years and two more albums.

In the fall of 2008, Dennis formed his own group known as The Dennis Nykoliation Band and includes some of the most talented musicians in Manitoba. The band's music therefore is the culmination of over 50 years of musical craftsmanship and artistry and uniquely captures 3 different types of musical categories by a fiddler who " plays 'em like he hears 'em. "

Dennis lives in Barrie Ontario and is married to Bette - they have four grown children and eight grandchildren.

Paul Pododworny

Paul was 16 years old when he played with first his old time dance band in the Interlake region of Manitoba where he was born and raised. Not long after, he played drums with the Interlake Polka Kings when they played their first tour of the prairie provinces in 1966. Actually, Dennis Nykoliation played violin for the band at that time, so he and Paul go a long way back.

In 1968, Paul moved to Winnipeg to study at the University of Manitoba where he met many musicians through his brother Orest, who was an accomplished Saxaphone player and music arranger in his own right. Paul played with many well known musicians - the Al Miller Band, Tommy Buick, the Gordon Pearson band and the Versatiles to name a few. His career expanded to lounge and night club bands like Tony Francis, Pat Blye and Mike Joyle. Around that period in the early 1970's, he joined Hector Bremner and the Lockport Studio Band at the Town & Country Cabaret where the band backed up entertainers from Las Vegas and New York

In 1972, Paul became the drummer for Ray St. Germain and his band and stills joins him on stage to this day whenever they play their shows. While with Ray, the band backed up some great fiddlers and violinists like Al Cherney, Stan Winestock, Marcel Meilleur, Mark Morriseau, Clint Dutiame and Sierra Noble. During this period, Paul was able to branch out and form his own jazz band in the 1983-1985 period to further broaden his musical horizons, in addition to playing with other groups like Sherrise Lawrence, the Al Andrusco Trio the Walle Larsson Jazz Band, Double Eagle and the big bands of David Jandridch, Kerry Klunner and Jimmy King.

In addition to drumming with the Dennis Nykoliation band, Paul also performs with The Marvells, the Bob Jackson Dixieland Band and several others

Bill Scherbatiuk

Bill began his musical career in Wadena Saskatchewan at a young age having been encouraged by his parents to express his plentiful musical talents. Bill and his sister Anne Pleskach have enjoyed considerable success in releasing 3 albums of Ukrainian song and instrumentals that very nicely express the musicality that they have developed after many years of being on stage together with the Mosaics. Bill is a talented musician who plays lead guitar, rhythm guitar, steel guitar and the saxophone and is a gifted vocalist in his own right.

After working with a variety of Saskatchewan bands Bill came to Winnipeg in 1967 where he joined The Winnipeg Melody Kings. They recorded an album in 1969 that was in vogue with the artists of that time. Bill moved on and played with Peter Picklyk, another well known Manitoba artist, who carved a niche in the prairie style type of Ukrainian music that has become synonymous in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Bill has been a member of the unique well known Ukrainian Old Timers band for the past 12 years and has gained considerable notoriety in the manner in which he plays the rhythm guitar along with the lead guitar " licks " thrown in.

Bill is featured on the Dennis Nykoliation band's " 22 Fiddle Classics " album and has been able to play numerous live performances with them.
